Less Traveled Hikes, and a Great DriveIf itâs peace and quiet you are looking for, there is no shortage in the Helen area. With four state parks within 30 minutes of Helen plus the Chattahoochee National Forest, there are miles to stretch into where few others roam. Here are some shorter hikes that are usually not as crowded.Bottoms Loop Trail at Unicoi State Park - There is a wonderful 2.5 mile hike at Unicoi State Park that wraps around the lake. If you want the hike less traveled, try the Bottoms Loop Trail. It is a 2 mile long adventure through woodlands and streams. Get more information at the Visitor Center located at the lodge and be sure to ask for a trail map - some turns may not be marked clearly. All state parks charge $5 for a day pass.Laurel Ridge Trail at Smithgall Woods - This 1.6 mile loop trail is beside the Visitor Center near the entrance to the park. There is a bit of a climb, but the view of Mt. Yonah is your treat for the effort! The park is gated so be sure to plan your hike during hours of operation. All state parks charge $5 for a day pass.
